After weeks of careful preparation for Mallorca Cricket Club’s fifteenth annual Bonfire Night all the hard work literally came crashing down around the organisers’ ears. Gale force winds, which had, by early afternoon, already demolished tented stands, forced the committee to convene an emergency meeting at 5.15pm where they prudently decided to employ alternative measures. Chairman Andrew Clemence delivered the disappointing but inevitable news that in the interest of public safety the bonfires could not be lit nor the firework display take place. However, the public would be offered free admittance. Those who elected to stay and brave the elements certainly made the best of the situation enjoying children’s entertainers Milly and Tilly and live sessions from Liam Live and Nicky Stixx; the determined revellers, some of who had travelled from as far afield as Cala D’Or and Arta, ate, drank and made merry despite the freezing wind. This was a Bonfire Night to remember…for all the wrong reasons. PLEASE NOTE: At the time of writing there is a possibilty that something could be arranged for this coming Friday 13th.
