Abstract: A COUPLE OF HUNDRED PEOPLE ENJOYED A GREAT FUNDRAISING AFTERNOON FOR SSAFA. SINGER IZZY NEWMAN MADE THE AFTERNOON GO WITH A SWING.

ANNE SCHOLES POURING THE YORKSHIRE TEA

The Big Brew Up 2009 in aid of SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen -Forces Help) was an unqualified success when over two hundred good hearted people turned up at the Mallorca Cricket Ground on Wednesday 7th October to help swell the coffers of this worthy charity. The gorgeous songstress Izzy Newman who kindly volunteered her services made the afternoon go with the proverbial swing as copious amounts of Yorkshire Tea, donated by Taylors of Harrogate, was consumed! The total raised for SSAFA on the day was 850 euros. This amount was achieved by a raffle and a buffet; the visiting team Huncote Cricket Club kindly donated 20 euros which was raised by the players who chipped in 50 centimos for every boundary scored in their match against Wealdstone CC. However, I am delighted to report that an anonymous donor has generously topped up the amount that SSAFA will receive to a healthy 1,250 euros. Thanks to Izzy and to the local businessmen and women who kindly gave raffle prizes; to Crème de la Crème catering service who provided the disposable plates, cups and cutlery, to Nice Price for flour and sugar, and for the bottled water for the Yorkshire Tea; and to Colin at Roosters who gave a special deal on the roast chickens. Thanks to the committee of the Mallorca Cricket Club who allowed the use of the club’s facilities.
The two touring teams Huncote CC and Wealdstone CC entered into the spirit of the occasion by agreeing to play their match with musical accompaniment…umpires John Layton and Cedric Burdett clearly enjoyed the party atmosphere; John was spotted gyrating at square leg!
Finally and thanks to all the wonderful people who came from far and wide to support this fundraising event. There are still a few unclaimed raffle prizes and these can be retrieved from the Cricket Ground this weekend. The prizes are:
