Abstract: YOUNG PROFESSIONAL SAM SEADON AND JOHN FRY SHARE TREMENDOUS FIRST WICKET STAND OF 165 DESPITE MALLORCA'S BOWLERS' BEST EFFORTS.

SUTTON CC'S TOURIING SIDE

Sutton Cricket Club has a long and illustrious history; its members celebrated the club’s 150 year anniversary two years ago, but this year saw their first tour to Mallorca. It began with an emphatic win over Mallorca’s 1st X1 on Saturday when opening batsmen Sam Seadon and John Fry put on 165 for the first wicket despite Mallorca’s bowlers’ best efforts. It was Paul Heaton’s second stint that produced the breakthrough when ‘keeper Eric George stumped Seadon to end his tremendous innings of 85 in which he dispatched the ball to the boundary on thirteen occasions including a massive six. The twenty two year old county cricketer demonstrated his talent in an awesome display. Heaton didn’t allow Dave Mitchell to settle, bowling him for just 1 with the score at 174 in the twenty fifth over. Fry warmed to his task as he and Dave Lewis pushed the score to 230 before Jon Barratt dismissed the seemingly invincible Fry just two short of what would have been a well deserved century. Barratt rearranged Simon Bliss’s stumps with 260 on the board as Lewis continued to punish Mallorca’s bowling, notching up his half-century and finishing unbeaten on 55. Sam Schofield not out 16; Sutton’s final tally: 295 for 4 from 40 overs.

The scorebook didn’t make happy reading for the homeside at tea.

With just short of 300 to chase Mallorca’s Paul Muckleberg and Paul Heaton faced a tough challenge. A brilliant catch by Seadon off Tom Hatton had Heaton walking back to the dressing room with 3 scored and just 5 runs on the board. Babar Qamar-Shahzad hit Hatton for six in his brief innings before he went to a catch by Lewis off Phil Diaper for 14. Wes Walker found the boundary a couple of times before edging a Diaper delivery to Bliss at slip with the score at 64. Mallorca’s situation deteriorated further when Diaper bowled Muckleberg for 30: Mallorca 71 for 4 from fifteen overs. The homeside’s middle order Barratt and Yaseen put on 40 for the fifth wicket, but the score of 111 served as an omen when Barratt’s stumps were dismantled by Spencer Champ for 26. Champ hit a purple patch dismissing Yaseen for 24 and trapping Andrew Clemence LBW for 4 with the score at 131. Sam Schofield mercilessly finished off Mallorca’s tail, accounting for Cook, George and Leaver’s wickets. Mallorca finished well short of the target: 165 all out.

Sutton’s bowlers recorded impressive figures. Spencer Champ: 8-1-19-3. Phil Diaper: 8-1-21-3.
Sam Schofield: 6.5-0-20-3.
