Abstract: THE FOURTEENTH ANNUAL BONFIRE NIGHT PROVED MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN EVER WITH APPROXIMATELY 4,000 IN ATTENDANCE.
The inclement weather didn’t deter a record crowd from descending on the Mallorca Cricket Ground to celebrate the fourteenth Annual Bonfire Night on Wednesday evening. Those determined to reach the venue had to negotiate vast pools of water deposited by torrential rain throughout the previous night. Cricket Club members had battled all day to make the lane to the club more accessible, but a further deluge around three o’clock in the afternoon washed out their efforts. Fortunately the weather had settled by the time the gates opened at six o’clock. The Luna Radio crew entertained the early birds with music and competitions and live music sessions by Liam Live added another exciting dimension to the evening. This year’s musically accompanied firework display was, for the first time, a professionally orchestrated spectacular. Business at the food and drink stalls was extremely brisk. At the time of writing the attendance is estimated at almost 4,000, well in excess of previous years. The grand raffle was drawn at the end of the evening; the first prize, donated by Island Cruises, a Mediterranean cruise for two on the Island Star, was won by Mr. Danny Winkworth. The following prizes were unclaimed: 2nd prize: ticket 2038 and 3rd prize: ticket 2218. Thanks to Dean Barker who when requested at the eleventh hour erected an awning to protect the goodies on the Traditional Bonfire Fayre stand. Jason Brown from the famous Tom Brown’s eatery in Magaluf cheerfully volunteered his services at the end of the evening ferrying pedestrians from the ground to the end of the waterlogged lane in his van. The Ayuntamiento of Calvia, The Mallorca Daily Bulletin, Luna Radio 100.3 and Pirates Adventure were crucial in their promotion of what has become the single biggest British run event on Mallorca; thanks to all concerned for ensuring that the event was yet another unqualified success..
