Encouraging the younger generation to play cricket is an uphill struggle in Mallorca. For years many have attempted the almost impossible task of trying to stir up interest by talking to the various International Schools on the island. Recently Tom Leeming introduced short cricket to the pupils of Queens College; whilst the children appeared to enjoy the sessions few followed up by attending nets at the club. However, there is a nucleus of youngsters who do come to nets; they also accompany their fathers on match days; which is when these boys spend the entire day in the nets having the time of their lives. It is heartening to see and hear their enthusiasm for the game. Eight year old Sascha Goonesekera travels with his family from Arta in the far reaches of the island and with his friend of the same age Adib Yaseen and twelve year old Daniel Clemence the trio practise their batting and bowling until they are literally hauled from the nets after close of play! David Hilton came to the club when his parents moved to the island from Yorkshire, David, now sixteen, has been a playing member for two years. He played to a good standard at Collingham Cricket Club near Wetherby and attended nets at Yorkshire. He is a promising all rounder, and an asset to the club. This season, 2007, he has matured. Toby Holcroft is another valuable junior member whose A levels have had to take precedence recently, we hope to see Toby return to the fray in the near future. These youngsters are the future; the club welcomes juniors to nets on Friday evenings from 4.30pm…come along and join in the fun! Nationality isn't a barrier; our youngsters are a truly international group
.

The latest news is that the Junior Section is booming, which is very encouraging; just a couple of weeks ago some twenty children from King Richard 111 school in Portals Nous attended nets. Promising new recruit Daniel Rogers has already had a couple of games for the Sunday X1 and made his mark taking a total of four wickets to date.
